Food and Drink
Now, lets be honest here, food is good!. It taste wonderful, I really do beleive that food is one of the few pleasures in life, but lets face it
there is a heavy price to pay for food, especially if we make the wrong choices. Now, I aint gonna preach about food because I am no saint myself
and I am prone to overindulging every now again, ok then, every again and again... thats why I run! ...Running burns fat!. it is one of the best things about
running.
However, when we run we need some serious energy to keep us going... and where does this energy come from? yeap! it comes from food, so in
order to be able to run efficiently and good we need to eat efficiently and good to fuel our bodies, if we eat rubbish we run rubbish, its that
simple, you dont need to be a trained nutritionist to figure that out.
Its all a lot of common sense ...Avoid foods high in bad fats and sugar, alcohol, junk food, especially
before a run, they will do you no good ...BELEIVE ME! ... You just have to eat smarter and healthier, I tend to try and stick to 5-6 small meals in the
day, instead of overloading my system with three large meals which only make me feel sluggish and lethargic, this is because when you eat a very large
meal your poor digestive system has to do a looot of work to digest that food, any wonder you feel sleepy after a heavy meal?, it is because your body
needs all its resources to digest the food, it practically shuts down!.
Brown bread, wholemeal cereal, skimmed/semi skimmed milk, lean meats, fish, chicken
and lots of fruits and vegetables are a runner's good friend ... I tend to apply the 80:20 rule, I eat healthy 80% of the time and the rest 20% are for
the 'naughty foods', you gotta live a little is my philosophy.
Another tip, is when you start your running life is not the time to diet! ... don't go cutting
your calories drastically or going on fad diets, it will not help you to run efficiently, you need the daily recommended amount of calories to be able to
run well ...and finally dont sweat the small stuff, if you overindulge one day, tomorrow is another day, besides, running is a great fat blaster...
a great reason to run ... a word is enough for the wise, lets move on ...
Thats water I mean!. As a runner you need to keep hydrated at all times! water is your best friend. I try to drink 2 liters of water a day and it
really does help...Try it! ...Replace one or two cups of coffee with two large glasses of water and replace soda drinks with water, its a great purifer,
not only is it a running tip but it is also a great beauty tip!, water makes your skin supple, which makes you look younger, you dont need to spend a
fortune on expensive 'miracle' creams or botox, just drink water, it also flushes out your system ... who needs colonic irrigation when you can drink
water ...its also good for your digestive system, your brain, joints, kidney's, lungs, I could go on all day but you hopefully get the message.
Soda's, coffee's are also okay, but in moderation, like I say you gotta live a little, and I mean a little!. Now, on to alcohol, I love my champagne, my white
wine but I try to avoid drinking the night before I have to run, it really does slow you down ...now, a bottle of beer AFTER a run is okay if thats what
you enjoy ... everything in moderation ... My shoulders are beginning to ache from all this writing ... you get the general gist ...
